Imphal, February 04 2023:
The Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has said that the death of N Premananda should not be taken lightly as he was a part of the police team who went to Urantop Hill in Chandel district to destroy poppy plantations under the Government's War on Drugs.
CADA, in a statement, said that the killing of N Premananda could have been intentional and done by those who opposed the campaign to serve a message to the Government.
It would be right to announce N Premananda as a martyr of the War on Drugs campaign, the CADA said and added that the inability of the Government to trace and save the VDF personnel, however, shows their weaknesses.
Urging the Government to probe the death of the VDF personnel properly and find out whether armed groups have any involvement in it, CADA said that the case needs to be handed over to Central agency, if required.
Saying that such deaths could demoralize police personnel taking part in the War on Drugs campaign, CADA further urged the Government to book the killer(s) and provide adequate compensation to the bereaved family.
There is a strong suspicion of involvement of armed groups in poppy plantations and as such the State needs to intensify the War on Drugs campaign, it added.
