Havildar shoots, injures six AR men; kills self

Imphal, January 24 2024:
A havildar of Assam Rifles Sajik Tampak Battalion located along the India-Myanmar border under Chandel district reportedly shot himself dead after inflicting bullet injuries to six others including a warrant officer on Wednesday morning.
The deceased trooper has been identified as Havildar Pauthangsang Baite of Churachandpur.
According to a police report, Havildar Pauthangsang shot and injured six other personnel including a warrant officer at the barrack of the Battalion around 2.30am.He then shot himself dead.
The six injured personnel have been airlifted to the military hospital at Leimakhong for medical treatment.
Amongst them, one of the personnel was later admitted to RIMS Hospital as his condition was serious, the report informed.
Meanwhile, a Manipur Police statement said that in light of the ongoing ethnic strife in the state, it is important to share the details of the incident transparently to dispel any potential rumours and avoid any speculation.
"This unfortunate incident should not be correlated with ongoing conflict, given the fact that none of the injured are from Manipur.
Investigation into the incident has been ordered to ascertain the facts," the statement said.
It said that all Assam Rifles battalions have mixed class composition including those belonging to various communities from Manipur.
"All personnel have been staying and operating together despite the polarisation of society to maintain peace and stability in Manipur" .
Sources stated that the incident is not believed to be connected to any ongoing conflict in the region, as none of the injured are from Manipur.
