Ukhrul, January 24 2024:
Over 200-members of Ukhrul District Taxi Welfare Association (UDTWA) came together to carry out voluntary Repair work of Ukhrul town main road on Wednesday.
UDTWA co-ordinated with several prominent personalities like ADC Ukhrul caretaker chairman Mark A Luithing, Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo, Ukhrul SP Ningshem Vashum and social activist Somatai Shaiza, who extended support to the voluntary service.
Led by UDTWA president CH Khathing and secretary RS Genesis Mahung, more than 200 members of the taxi association participated in this noble act of service.
The repair work covered a stretch of around 5km, starting from Naga Gate, Hungpung to Awontang bus terminal, Hunphun.
An official source from UDTWA informed that the initiative was taken up by the taxi association due to the continuous negligence of relevant authorities in maintaining the road.
Despite bringing the issue to their attention, no action was taken, causing immense hardships to the public.
The bad road conditions not only made it difficult for vehicles to navigate but also posed a threat to the safety of commuters, it said.
Frustrated by the lack of action, UDTWA, in collaboration with other influential figures, decided to take it upon themselves to repair the road.
The voluntary service focused on mending numerous potholes on the road by blacktopping them, making the road safer and more convenient for the general public to commute, the source added.
The repair work began in the morning and continued throughout the day, with the UDTWA members displaying great enthusiasm and dedication towards their work.
They used necessary tools and machinery like roller to fill up the potholes and level the road surface.
