AR foils smuggling of betel nuts, timber

Imphal, January 24 2024:
In response to credible intelligence indicating unlawful transportation of areca nuts and timber in the region of Shanklok and Kangpat Centre, Assam Rifles launched a search operation and intercepted a total of seventeen trucks carrying areca nuts and timber without necessary valid documentation, on Wednesday.
According to PRO 1GAR (S), the search operation resulted in the seizure of 1205 bags of areca/betel nuts, weighing approximately 96.4 tonnes and valued at Rs 11.568 crore.
Additionally, 850 cubic feet of timber, valued at Rs 6.8 lakh, were seized.
The cumulative value of the seized items is estimated at Rs.11.636 crore.
The confiscated goods have been handed over to the Forest Beat Officer of Kamjong district, the PRO informed.
