Imphal, February 01 2024:
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the brutal killing of Ngangom Nevi has demanded capital punishment for the culprits involved in the killing of the young man from Sugnu Mandop Leikai, Sugnu Ward No 2 .
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, Aheibam Chanthoi, JAC convenor informed that Nevi had gone missing in the midst of the intense attack launched by Kuki militants at Sugnu on May 28, 2023 .
Initially, viral audio and text messages had proliferated social media sites suggesting his death at the hands of Kuki militants.
However, his mortal remains had remained undiscovered until yesterday.
His last rites were performed with a Pangong replica used in replacement of his body, she said.
As seen in the viral video, Aheibam Chanthoi stated that after killing Nevi, suspected Kuki militants proceeded to slit his throat and leaked the video in a manner that appears to be mocking the public.
Highlighting the barbaric nature of the killing, she further pointed out that after killing Nevi and slitting his throat, the suspected Kuki militants had inserted a beer can inside his throat.
The JAC and the public of Sugnu strongly condemn the act of desecrating a dead body which is devoid of all humanity and demanded swift arrest of the perpetrators involved and awarding them with capital punishment.
On another pertinent note, the JAC convenor maintained that the spot where the presumed skeletal remains of Ngangom Nevi was found is surprisingly less than 200 metres away from the 37 Assam Rifles camp at Sugnu and in front of Sokom village chief's house.
Questioning the lack of knowledge of 37 AR in this connection, she stated that both the JAC and the people of Sugnu strongly condemn the AR's inaction and cautioned that they cannot dismiss this issue by feigning ignorance.
She also highlighted the hardships faced by Nevi's grieving family and demanded the State Government to provide a suitable Government job for one of his family members.
Calling upon the State Government to fulfill these demands within a week, Aheibam Chanthoi also sought a meeting between State officials and the JAC before the week is over.
The JAC and Sugnu public have resolved to not claim the dead body until these demands are met, she said.
In addition, she urged the State Government to grant permission for Ngangom Nevi to be buried alongside other martyrs of the conflict.
