Imphal, May 06 2026:
The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor (VC) for the National Sports University (NSU) and the immediate termination of the current VC-in-charge and the Registrar of NSU.
In a letter jointly signed by its directors Dr Atom Sunil and N Ratan Meetei, and president M Khelendro, AIMS emphasised that the prolonged absence of a regular VC for NSU will hinder efforts to promote sports on the international stage.
Compounding the issue, AIMS claimed, is that the current VC-in-charge and the Registrar have turned NSU into their personal asset by recruiting personnel without advertising the positions.
The organisation also stated that 70 hostel inmates at NSU in Khuman Lampak suffered food poisoning and received emergency medical aid on January 29 this year.
Considering these alleged lapses, AIMS appealed to the Prime Minister to remove the VC-in-charge and the Registrar and appoint a new VC for NSU.
In another statement, AIMS stated that they have been informed by the Prime Minister's Office that a regular VC will be appointed shortly.
It said that the information was received via a communique dated 13 April 2026 in which it was stated, "The process for appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor in NSU is underway and the VC will be appointed after completion of the due formalities with the approval of the competent authority" .
AIMS said that NSU has been functioning without a regular VC for the last five years.
The NSU is being run and managed by a person who is of an Associate Professor rank as the officiating VC who in connivance with an official has been carrying out many unauthorized appointments without prior advertisements or notice, it alleged.
Further claiming that there are also charges of the Registrar hiring vehicles belonging to his family members for use by the NSU, AIMS urged the Central Bureau of Investigation to take up a suo-motu cognizance of the activities at the NSU during the last five years.
