Developing Ukhrul as summer capital of Manipur ; State may seek eco package from Centre

Imphal, December 03 2023: The State Government may propose a one-time economic package from the Centre for development of Ukhrul as the State's summer capital.

The proposal for a one-time economic package should be however preceded by a Cabinet decision to this effect, said a well placed source.

Notably, the denizens of Ukhrul submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren on October 18, 2023 and one major demand highlighted through the memorandum was development of Ukhrul as the summer capital of Manipur.

The Chief Minister and his Cabinet Ministers held a Cabinet meeting at Ukhrul on the same day where N Biren also addressed a public meeting.

Responding to the memorandum, the Chief Minister stated that development of Ukhrul as a summer capital of the State is one priority of his Government.

Pointing out that the existing Ukhrul town is quite congested, Biren appealed to the denizens of Ukhrul to consider development of a new township near Sirarakhong.

In case Ukhrul should be developed as the summer capital of the State, there must be some basic infrastructure.

For example, there must be Raj Bhavan, Assembly, Civil Secretariat, Chief Ministers bungalow, residential quarters of Cabinet Ministers, MLAs' apartments, apartments of IAS, IFS, IPS, MCS and MPS officers, apartments of other officers and staff, water supply, internal roads, power supply and police station etc, said the source.

Development of these basic infrastructure may require Rs 1500 crore to Rs 2000 crore.

With the State Government not in a position to invest such a huge amount at the moment, it will need to seek a one-time economic package from the Centre, said the source.

It is said that after Imphal, Ukhrul is the oldest town of Manipur.

Apart from being a district, Ukhrul has many historical significance.

In addition, Ukhrul is known for its natural beauty, salubrious and pleasant climatic conditions.

As such, development of Ukhrul as a summer capital of Manipur is a common aspiration of the people of Ukhrul, said the source.
