Violence-affected medical students of Churachandpur Medical College, currently pursuing medical courses at COVID Hospital, Kyamgei Mayai Leikai temporary facility, on Thursday staged demonstration demanding adequate number of staff and basic infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the demonstration staged near the COVID Hospital, one Moirangthem Deepak Singh, a 2nd-year MBBS student of Churachandpur Medical College, expressed concern over shortage of faculties for different courses.
Although guest lecturers are engaged for lectures and practical classes, there are no permanent faculties for two years.
The student also pointed out that there is only one each senior resident for Microbiology and Pharmacology departments, and none for the Pathology department.
As relying solely on guest lecturers is not sufficient to run a medical college, authorities should appoint full-time faculty by the end of August, he demanded.
Deepak also highlighted inconveniences faced in attending clinical assignments in other hospitals as a round trip generally takes one and half to two hours, leaving them with very limited time for clinical exposure.
Moreover, since Thoubal and Bishnupur district hospitals are not affiliated under Churachandpur Medical College, teachers face certain limitations even if Willing to take classes, he maintained and suggested that the government addressing such pressing issues by attaching the college to a well-established hospital, considering the fate of 183 students.
Deepak further mentioned that of the 183 students, only a few could be accommodated in the hostel.
Numerous memorandums were submitted to the Governor and the chief secretary urging them to address the issues faced by the students but positive response remains elusive, he lamented and appealed to the authorities concerned to arrange a hostel facility nearby the Covid Hospital that can accommodate all the students and reduce their transportation costs.
