Imphal, April 18 2025:
Assam Rifles reportedly launched an operation in Kam-pang Khullen area in Tengnoupal district on Wednesday, and intercepted 23 trucks illegally transporting timber without valid transit permits.
According to PRO IGAR (S), the operation was aimed at curbing smuggling of forest produce, a major funding source for valley based insurgent groups (VBIGs).
Drivers were detained after failing to produce valid documentation, and the trucks along with the timber were seized.
The forest department was informed and conducted field verification on the same day.
However, following a written correspondence from the district forest office, the trucks were released on Thursday.
According to Forest officials, the seized timber was valued at approximately Rs 14.28 lakh, the PRO informed.
On the other hand, Assam Rifles prevented two separate major fire incidents by swiftly responding to fire emergencies in Chandel district within a span of 10 days.
According to the PRO, on Wednesday, a fire broke out at a shop in Gamphazol village which had inflammable liquids.
Upon noticing thick smoke and fast-spreading flames, troops from the nearby Assam Rifles post immediately mobilised with firefighting equipment and water ferrying vehicles.
Their timely and prompt action averted a major disaster.
The Assam Rifles medical team also administered first aid to two civilians who sustained minor injuries.
Earlier, on April 6, Assam Rifles had similarly averted a major forest fire near Yangoubung village in Chandel district.
The fire escalated due to strong winds and threatened the nearby populated areas.
Alerted by the villagers, Assam Rifles deployed two teams with firefighting equipment, effectively containing the blaze and preventing damage to nearby homes, the PRC informed.
