Imphal, April 14 2024:
The families of missing persons affected by the crisis in the state since May 3, last year, have submitted a memorandum addressed to union home minister Amit Shah through BJP Manipur Pradesh general secretary K Sarat on Sunday, highlighting their grievances and uncertainty awaiting news of their loved ones.
The memorandum stated that approximately 31 individuals have gone missing since the onset of the crisis.
Despite registering FIRs with the police authorities, the families are unaware of progress of the investigations.
This lack of information has left the families in a state of distress and uncertainty.
The families appealed for urgent action to trace the missing persons or, if confirmed deceased, to retrieve their remains in a dignified manner.
They also emphasised the importance of proper mourning rites and the need for the authorities to shoulder the responsibility for bringing the perpetrators to book.
The memorandum also highlighted the financial distress faced by the families, particularly those who are dependent on the missing persons for their livelihood.
Some of the missing persons are government employees but their families are not receiving any salary or retirement benefits due to the ongoing investigation.
As a result, the families are experiencing significant hardships amidst rising inflation and living costs, mentioned the memorandum.
Citing such challenges, the families urged the union home minister for direct intervention from both state and central authorities to trace the missing persons, retrieve their remains if confirmed deceased, and ensure dignified handling of their bodies.
Additionally, they sought for any other necessary directions deemed fit and proper for the welfare of the affected families, in accordance with the law.
