Kangpokpi, January 24 2025:
Kangpokpi district's ASHA workers have launched a full-scale ceasework strike on Friday, in support of the agitation launched by All Manipur ASHA Workers' Union.
As part of their protest, they also announced boycott of this year's Republic Day celebrations, to denounce prolonged neglect and unfulfilled promises by the government.
The decision was conveyed by Kangpokpi ASHA Workers general secretary Hatneo Vaiphei, who highlighted the systemic neglect, insufficient honorarium, and lack of job security faced by the workers.
"We deliver essential healthcare services in the most remote areas, yet our contributions are undervalued.
This strike and boycott are necessary to demand justice and dignity for our work," stated Hatneo Vaiphei.
The workers' agitation follows the government's failure to respond to a January 5 ultimatum served by the All Manipur ASHA Workers' Union, demanding better compensation and regularisation of services.
The deadline passed without any response, leaving the workers with no alternative but to intensify their protest.
The strike is expected to disrupt'critical healthcare services, especially in rural areas where ASHA workers play an indispensable role in maternal and child healthcare, immunisation, and awareness campaigns.
As Republic Day approaches, the workers emphasised their boycott as a symbolic fight for justice and fair treatment.
They urged the government to initiate immediate dialogue and address their demands.
