Floral tribute paid to victims of Heirok massacre

16th 'Mangai Piba Numit' (Day of Enlightenment) annual commemoration of the three victims of the infamous Heirok Thabal Chongba massacre of March 24, 2008 was observed at the memorial of the victims near Ningsing Sanglen at Heirok part I, Thoubal district.
Owing to the ongoing turmoil in the state, the year's Mangal Piba Numit was observed only by the bereaved families of the three victims namely, Thokchom Romesh, Thokchom Promila and Laishram Nirmala along with the SPO Heirok commanders.
During the event, the bereaved families paid floral tribute to the three victims and observed a two minute silence to pray for the eternal peace of their soul.
Addressing the media, RPN Memorial Trust publicity secretary L Megha said that the 'Mangai Piba Numit' was observed every year in commemoration of the victims of the heinous incident and to constantly remind the future generation that war and violence only yields sufferings.
He urged the people to learn from the infamous 'Heirok Thabal Chongba incident' and to work in tandem for a better and peaceful Manipur.
Asserting that the incident had sparked a movement against 'gun culture' in the state, he appealed for any incident similar to the Heirok massacre to never happen anywhere in the future.
