National workshop on Intellectual Property Rights held

Manipur University, School of Life Sciences conducted a two-day National Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights on March 28 and Friday, which focused on the importance of intellectual property and enlightened the academic and scientific communities on the need and value of safeguarding intellectual creations.
The inaugural function of the programme held at MU Court Hall was attended by MU vice chancellor professor N Lokendra Singh as chief guest and School of Life Sciences dean professor G K N Chhetry as president, while Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) director Dr L Minaketan Singh, MU College Development Council (CDC) director professor N Mohilal Meitei and Department of Law head associate professor Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh were present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, MU VC professor N Lokendra emphasised on the varsity's commitment to fostering creativity and innovation and stressed the importance of protecting indigenous knowledge and commercialising it, referring to Manipur's diverse rice types documented during the British Raj and the unique Manipuri handlooms.
On the first day of the workshop, MAS-TEC Patent Information Centre faculty L Surjit Singh spoke on the topic of 'An overview on Intellectual Property Rights', Dr Y Premananda Singh on 'Overview on Indian Patent Law: Legislation and Judicial Trends' and workshop organising secretary Dr Sivakumar Vijayaraghavalu on 'From Bench to Copyright: Navigating Intellectual Property in Science'; while on the second day, Bhavesh Associates patent attorney and founder Dr Deepa Boppana spoke on 'Patents - A Tool for Professional Enhancement', Indira Gandhi National Open University, Pune regional director Dr Munish Kumar on 'IPR - Economic Significance to a Nation: Unveiling the Keystone of Innovation and Growth, S A Raja Pharmacy College, Tamil Nadu vice principal Dr Venkateswaram Krishnaswami on 'An Overview on Trademark' and professor G K N Chhetry on 'An Overview on Geographical Indications - Plant Variety Protection and Fanners Right' .
The valedictory function held at Department of Life Sciences (Zoology) Annexure Building on Friday was attended by professor G K N Chhetry as chief guest and Department of Zoology head professor Th Binoy Singh as president, while professor N Mohilal Meitei, Department of Biochemistry head professor Debananda Singh Ningthoujam and Department of Biochemistry head Dr Potshangbam Nongdampuren Meetei were present as guests of honour.
A total of 165 participants attended the workshop.
