AMWJU tour concludes, tribute paid to war heroes at Mt Manipur

Imphal, March 30 2024:
The exposure tour of women journalists to Andaman & Nicobar Islands under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and sponsorship of Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Manipur concluded on March 24, 2024 .
The tour was flagged off by Chief Minister N Biren Singh on March 16, 2024 from the gate of CM's Bungalow in Imphal.
As part of the tour, the team of 28 members including 18 women journalists and two officials from the DIPR, Government of Manipur led by AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam embarked on a historic journey to Mount Manipur (erstwhile Mt Harriet) and paid homage to 23 heroes of Manipur on March 22 .
These 23 heroes, including Maharaj Kulchandra Singh, were deported to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in connection with the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 .
At Mt Manipur, the team of journalists also commemorated the AMWJU's first tour to the Andaman Islands which Occurred 21 years ago in 2003 .
The team planted tree saplings including 'Yongchak', 'Kundo' and observed two minutes of silence to pay homage & remember the sacrifices of the unsung heroes.
The team of journalists also visited Kala Pani (Cellular Jail) and witnessed a light & sound show depicting the struggles of freedom fighters.
Notably, during the initial visit to the Andaman Islands in 2003, it was revealed that the 23 deported heroes of Manipur were not imprisoned in Kala Pani (Cellular Jail) but instead housed at the then Mount Harriet as they were political prisoners.
