Imphal, May 25 2025:
Pointing out the importance of remembering the contributions of 'gurus' in the field of art and culture, Manipur University of Culture (MUC) vice chancellor professor P Gunindro reminded that Manipur's pride in securing a place on the global stage of art and culture is due to efforts and achievements of the cultural exponents.
The 90th birth anniversary of Guru Naorem Bokul-jao Singh was organised by Bokuljao Memorial Charitable Trust at Panthoibi Shanglen, Samurou Naorem Chaprou on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, professor Gunindro highlighted that Manipuri art and culture has secured a prominent place on the international stage because of its distinct aesthetic and ethical qualities, setting it apart from others.

He noted that although Nat Sankirtana was introduced to Manipur from West Bengal, it transformed into a unique form upon reaching the state.
This transformation is the reason why Manipuri Nat Sankirtana has been included in UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it embodies the rich cultural and traditional essence of Manipur, said the vice chancellor.
He also pointed out that the recognition of Manipuri Nat Sankirtana at the international level is the result of the selfless contributions made by the teachers and gurus in this field.
He urged that the present generation must not forget their invaluable contributions.
Professor Gunindro also shared that out of the 490 universities in the country, only three are dedicated to culture, with Manipur University of Culture being one of them.
He maintained that the inclusion of courses such as Thang-Ta and Lai Haraoba at MUC is a clear reflection of Manipur's rich cultural and traditional heritage.
Delivering the keynote address, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy Prad-han Guru Ksh Kriti recalled that Guru Bokuljao made significant contributions in the field of Nat Sankirtana and Pung.
Guru Bokuljao taught his students with a deep sense of dedication and selflessness, Kriti said, adding that the trust was established in 2013 to honour his legacy.
Presided over by Wangoi MLA Khuraijam Loken, the function was also attended by Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Leimapokpam Lak-pati Singh and All Manipur Music Association (AMMA) president Dr Yumnam Suren as guest of honour and special guest of honour respectively.
As part of the event, artistes from JNMDA presented performances including Meetei Pung Cholom, Dholop Cholom, Nat Sankirtana and Thakurdhou Nitya.
Additionally, the Radha Madhav Cultural Organisation, Manipur, showcased Krishna Leela and solo dance performances.
