Dr Ranjan calls for vigilance to combat pneumonia-related deaths

Imphal, January 24 2025:
Health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has called for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent pneumonia-related child mortality, even though the casualty rate in the state is relatively low.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the launch event of Social Awareness on Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) and National Newborn Week (NNW), held at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong, on Friday.
The programme was jointly organised by the State Health Society, National Health Mission, and Directorate of Health Services.
In his address, Dr Ranjan highlighted that pneumonia is prevalent among children under the age of five years, particularly during seasonal transitions and cold weather.
He stated that the awareness campaign aimed at disseminating vital information on the causes and preventive measures of pneumonia will be conducted in all districts to ensure grassroots-level outreach.
He also stressed the importance of organising such campaigns annually to address this health issue effectively.
While noting the role of paediatricians in creating awareness, the minister urged for involvement of Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) concerned and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the campaign.
The target is to reach every corner of the state, Dr Ranjan remarked, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in combating pneumonia.
Health Services director Dr Chambo Gonrnei presided over the event, while National Health Mission Manipur state mjssion director Dr M Dinesh, health services additional director Dr N Bino, and family welfare director Dr Hemantakumar attended as guests of honour.
