Imphal, August 27 2023:
Keirao Constituency MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei has asked the Central and the State Governments to first book and penalise the Kuki militants who attacked Meiteis and burnt down their houses at Churachandpur on May 3 and triggered the series of violence in Manipur.
Today, the district administration of Imphal East handed out MGNREGS special cards and CMHT cards to the displaced people from Moreh and Churachandpur taking refuge at the relief camp set up at Minority Girls' Hostel at Urup, Keirao.
At the function, the MLA who is the Chairman of Planning and Development Authority (PDA) continued that altogether 48 families from different parts of the State are taking shelter at the Urup relief camp after fleeing persecution.
Saying that another relief camp is under construction at Lilong Santipur, Rameshwor Meetei maintained that plan is afoot to construct a temporary market shed at Lilong Santipur for Meitei people who got displaced from Moreh so that they can sell vegetables or edibles.
The Government has been working to resettle the displaced folks from Moreh and other places on war footing by deploying adequate security forces, Rameshwor Meetei added.
To pave a way forward and restore peace, it is necessary for the Government to arrest the Kuki militants who torched several Meitei houses and attacked civilians using sophisticated weapons at Torbung Bangla on May 3, the MLA reiterated.
Saying that the State Government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh has been allocating an additional budget for the hill districts to bring uniform development in the State, the MLA continued that the Government had established a medical college at Churachandpur and has been promoting tourism and education in hill districts.
It is unlikely that the Kukis are unhappy with the developmental project carried out by the Government in the hill districts, Rameshwor Meetei claimed and asked the Kukis to clarify why they attacked the innocent Meitei people and raped a Meitei woman in the first place.
The Kuki people must hand over the gun wielding militants who attacked Meiteis on May 3 to the Government if they want normalcy to return in Manipur, the MLA said.
He went on to state that displaced Meiteis specially from Moreh and Churachandpur should be given arms training to protect themselves and their land and asked the people to take license guns instead of spending in luxury items.
Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Khumanthem Diana said that they have begun a survey to provide old age and widow pension benefits to the inmates.
She also said that the Government had started distributing one time financial assistance and a subsidised loan to the inmates of different relief camps.
