Committee calls off stir as CE assures repair work

Though the ad-hoc committee formed to exert pressure on the authority concerned for repairing the 12 km long Sawombung to Sagolmang road via Keibi has called off its proposed indefinite road blockade agitation following assurance given by the PWD Chief engineer to repair the same by December 7, the committee has made it clear that intense form of agitation would be launched if the repair work is not taken up within the assured dateline.
The agitation which started early Monday morning barred entry and exit of pas-senger vehicles along the Sawombung to Sagolmang road by the bandh supporters.
Though vehicles engaged in school services, medical and religious events exempted from purview of the agitation, the protesters enforced the bandh in-spite of attempt by a team of Sagolmang police station led by its OC to lift the blockade with the agitators demanding that either the works minister, PWD chief engineer or any other responsible department office give assurance of taking up the repairing at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons on the side-lines of the agitation, ad-hoc committee convenor Ningthoukhongjam Langamba Meetei informed that the matter was discussed at various platforms and had even figured in the assembly session where assurance was made to do the needful.
However, as the assurances given were not translated into action people of the area continue to suffer, he explained adding that the ad-hoc committee has been formed as passenger service along the road stretch stopped operating while school van service providers threatened cease service if the road is not repaired.
Meanwhile, the road blockade continued till late afternoon but was finally called off after the ad-hoc committee members met with the PWD chief engineer.
During the meeting, it was agreed that the repair work will commence by December 7.The ad-hoc committee, however, made it clear to the chief engineer that the agitation will continue in full swing from December 8 if the assurance of the chief engineer is not fulfilled.
