RIMS observes World No Tobacco Day

Dental College Department of Public Health Dentistry, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World No ' Tobacco Day 2025 at Banting Hall, RIMS, under the global theme 'Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products' on Saturday.
In a release, RIMS PRO informed that the programme was attended by RIMS director professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma as chief guest; Dental College principal professor B Praveen Reddy as president and RIMS medical superintendent professor N Sanjib Singh as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, professor, G Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasised the significance of the theme, 'Unmasking the Appeal', highlighting the need to expose the tobacco industry's deceptive tactics.
He noted that tobacco use is responsible for over one million deaths annually in India and contributes significantly to cancer and oral health problems, particularly through the use of smokeless tobacco.
He commended the efforts of RIMS Dental College; especially it's Tobacco Cessation Centre, in leading public health initiatives and urged students to take an active role in the fight against tobacco use.
As part of the observance, a symposium titled 'Breaking the Habit; A Multidisciplinary Dental Approach to Tobacco Cessation & Oral Health' was organised.
The session was chaired by head of department of pathology, RIMS, professor Dr Sushma Khuraijam and department of medicine professor Dr T Jeetenkumar Singh, it added.
The symposium featured insightful presentations and an engaging interactive session.
Expert speakers addressed a wide range of topics, including the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine products, manipulative strategies employed by the tobacco industry, and the pivotal role of dental and medical professionals in tobacco cessation strategies.
The event aimed to raise awareness about the deceptive practices of the tobacco industry and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in combating tobacco addiction through education, policy advocacy, and healthcare interventions.
The observance was attended by heads of departments, faculty members, and staff of the Dental College, it added.
