Imphal, November 25 2022:
In view of practical infeasibility in sending their children to private schools where all expenses are exorbitant, locals of Ujungmakhong village in Churachandpur district's Kangvai sub-division are yearning for setting up of a government primary school in the area.
The village settlement dated back to 1932 and the residents are mostly of Gangte and Thadou communities.
The residents also called the village Gangpibul in their dialect.
Located at a distance of around 28 km from Churachandpur district headquarters, the small village located at the foothills has a population of around 276 people with 32 households.
The village is the birthplace of the state's first woman MP Kim Gangte, who won the Lok Sabha election in 1998.Despite being the birthplace of such an illustrious woman politician, the local residents are deplored that the parliamentarian did nothing significant for the welfare and development'of the village which she could have.
According to village chief Bellaljohn Gangte, NERCORMP has been providing assistance to the village in taking up developmental works including construction of community hall and financial aid to Self Help Groups (SHGs) as well as community drinking water facilities.
The residents are happy that they are enjoying the benefits of MGNREGS, and works are underway to provide household tap water connection under Jal Jeevan Mission.
He said that they have been using tube well as the main source of water but are now planning to lay a water pipeline from Mashel River running at the foothill of Thangjing Hill through community contribution.
In the absence of any government schools in the nearby areas, they are sending their children to a private school located in a village up on the hill.
For higher studies, the students go to Churachandpur, Imphal or Shillong, he said and drew attention of the government towards the need of setting up a government primary school in the area.
The approach road to the village from Tiddim Road is in good condition but the streets in the village itself are in poor shape.
Most of the residents are farmers except for a few who carry out small time trades in Churachandpur and Imphal markets.
The village organises Gangpibul Youth Day as an annual gathering for youth and enjoy their quiet and simple rural lifestyles.
A little attention from the government would go a long way in bringing development and prosperity to the people of the village filled with serene landscapes.
