Training on social protection & livelihood security begins

A five-day training programme on Social Protection and Livelihood Security in the North East, which is being jointly organised by W Giri National Labour Institute (WGNLI), Noida; Indira Gandhi National Tribal University-RC Manipur (IGNTU-RCM), Makhan and Khongnangthaba University (KU), Imphal began at KU Imphal campus, Khurai Konsam Leikai on Monday.
The inaugural function was attended by IGNTU, Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh vice chancellor Prof Prakash Mani Tripathi as chief guest and KU VC Prof N Joykumar Singh as president, while IGNTU Amarkantak Tribal Studies dean Prof Prasanna K Samal and Imphal College principal Dr M Priyobrata Singh were present as guests of honour.
Sheel Mandal, Amarkantak chairperson and IGNTU first lady Sheela Tripathi and IGNTU-RCM director Prof Ng Ngalengnam along with WGNLI, Noida Centre for North East India fellow & co-ordinator Dr Otojit Kshetrimayum also attended the programme as special invitees.
Speaking at the programme, Prof P M Tripathi emphasised on the importance of providing social security, particularly in the North East.
It is not possible to provide government jobs to everyone.
As a result, such a training programme on social and livelihood security is very much required, he added.
On the other hand, delivering the keynote address, Dr Otojit mentioned that the training programme seeks to raise participants' understanding of social protection and livelihood security concerns in the NE.
The programme's major goals are to familiarise participants with notions of social protection and livelihood security through micro-level experiments around the country, including entrepreneurship and skill development, he added.
Otojit further said that its objective is also to involve the government and other social partners in establishing rural livelihood protection programmes.
