Mass plantation drives held in Senapati, Bishnupur

As part of the observance of 75th Van Mahotsav, Senapati Forest Division planted tree saplings around the multi-purpose hall near Senapati mini secretariat on Friday.
Addressing the gathering before commencement of the observance, Senapati Division Forest officer Shanngam S said that Van Mahotsav is a week-long festival celebrated in India from July 1 to 7 every year, dedicated to protect the environment by promoting tree plantation.
More plantations will be conducted at different parts of the district as part of the week-long observance, he said and extended gratitude to all the district level officers for assisting in the plantation drive.
Senapati DC Mamoni Doley, who took part in the plantation drive, said that Van Mahotsav is being celebrated throughout the country to create awareness among the people on the importance of planting trees and increasing plantations each year.
She urged all to look after the planted saplings so as to let them grow properly.
She urged village chairmen and secretaries and DLOs to create awareness on sustainable cutting of trees even if circumstances compel to cut down trees so that mudslides and landslides in the hills could be avoided.
More than 100 saplings of different varieties including some fruit plants were planted during the observance.
In connection with the observance of 75th Van-Mahotsav, 2024; Bishnupur Forest Division, Forest Department, also organised a mass tree plantation programme under the theme "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam: Plant4Mother" at Sangai Ethnic Park, Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district on Friday.
The tree plantation drive led by Bishnupur district deputy commissioner Lourembam Bikram was also attended by SP Ravikumar Ksh, DFO Waikhom Romabai, ADM SH Bobby Sharma, SDOs and other district level officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Lourembam Bikram informed that the tree plantation drive organised in connection with the observance aims to plant 10,000 saplings at 20 locations across the district.
The DC highlighted the importance of planting trees, underscoring the Severe impacts of climate change and the resultant outcomes like thunderstorms, hailstorms, landslides, floods, which the state has been facing since April this year.
He called upon the people to participate actively in protecting the forests to mitigate such calamities in the future.
The DC also urged the public to contribute individually by planting at least one tree per family, aligning with the theme of this year's Van Mahotsav.
Stressing that combating climate change is a global responsibility that requires local action, the DC encouraged everyone to think globally but act locally.
