Imphal, June 01 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for most parts of the Northeast, including Manipur, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
The alert has been issued amid continuous downpours and worsening flood situations in several districts, prompting warnings of flash floods, landslides, and other severe weather-related disruptions.
According to IMD's all-India weather summary and forecast bulletin, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue across the Northeast over the next seven days, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected across Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya on Monday, and possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall.
The upper air cyclonic circulation persisting over northeast Assam, coupled with a trough extending from East Uttar Pradesh to Arunachal Pradesh across central Bihar and Assam, is intensifying rainfall activity in the region.
On Monday, the red alert covers all north-eastern states except Arunachal Pradesh, warning of further heavy to very heavy downpours at isolated locations in Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds between 30 and 40 kmph are also likely in parts of Manipur and its neighbouring states.
On Tuesday, the IMD downgraded the warning to orange alert for Assam and surrounding states including Manipur.
Rainfall is likely to remain intense but slightly reduced.
The forecast continues to warn of thunderstorms with lightning in isolated pockets of the region till at least June 5.Weather conditions are expected to normalise by June 6 and 7, with no warning issued for those days.
IMD warned of potential impacts including localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, landslides, occasional reduced visibility, and possible damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures.
In Manipur, districts including Chandel, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul have been identified as having a moderate flash flood risk due to already saturated soils and expected surface runoff.
Agricultural activities are also expected to be affected.
Farmers in Manipur have been advised to postpone the sowing of finger millet, maize, and black gram, and to drain excess water from rice nursery beds, standing crops, and vegetable fields to avoid crop damage.
Authorities have urged the public to stay alert, avoid flood-prone and landslide-prone zones, and follow traffic and safety advisories.
