Thang-Ta instils patriotism, discipline: Leishemba Sanajaoba

Thang-Ta, the traditional martial art of Manipur, plays a crucial role in instilling discipline and a deep sense of patriotism, said Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the 2nd State Level Thang-Ta Changdamnaba 2024, held on Sunday at Shri Shri Bal Mukund Dev Music College, Palace Compound, Imphal.
The event was organised by E-Pao Tengbang Lup, Manipur, in collaboration with the Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS).
In his address, Sanajaoba emphasised that Thang-Ta is not only a martial art but also an integral part of Manipuri civilisation and history.
He highlighted that the traditional art form carries invaluable elements of culture, tradition, manner, discipline, and social conduct.
Thang Ta is closely associated with Manipuri civilisation and history, and should not be ignored.
A Thang-Ta artiste seldom indulges in substance abuse, but leads a healthy lifestyle.
It instils a sense of patriotism, Sanajaoba stated, calling for concerted efforts to preserve and promote the art form for future generations.
The ceremony was presided over by E-Pao Tengbang Lup convenor Dr Th Sunil Deva Singh, while advisor Okendro Athokpam, DESAM general secretary Thoithoiba Nongthombam, and former income tax officer Laishram Ramcharan attended as guests of honour.
The closing ceremony included distribution of awards to the outstanding participants of the competition.
In Ta Khousaba category, Thoiba Yumnam of Prism Academy took first place, followed by Sengoisana Lairenjam of Irom Meijrao Government High School in second, and Milky Athokpam of TG Higher Secondary School in third place.
In Thang Leiteng Haiba, Rex Akoijam of International Modernised Academy won the top position, with Nongthombam Lingjelthoibi of Lamlong Higher Secondary School and Thoibam Yumnam of Prism Academy taking second and third position, respectively.
Additionally, 11 participants were awarded consolation prizes for their performances.
The event also included a one-minute silence in honour of martyrs who have sacrificed their lives in the ongoing struggle to protect the integrity and unity of Manipur.
