Tangkhul 'brothers' urged to act as peacemaker

The Unity of Meitei Society (UMS), Hojai has stressed on the need for all civil society organisations (CSOs) and meira paibi groups in Manipur to unite and work collectively to effectively face challenges posed to the people.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club here on Thursday, UMS president L Gulap said that a 14-member delegation arrived on Wednesday to take stock of the situation in Manipur following the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3 .
Gulap stated that the unrest situation besieging Manipur is mainly due to the influx of illegal immigrants from across the border and opined proper border fencing would help address the influx issue > Moreover, blockade imposed along the national highways in Manipur sector, which is not seen in any other states, should also be lifted or the government authorities take befitting action against the blockaders.
He also stressed the need for the Tangkhul brothers to be the mediator in ending the violence between the Meiteis and the Kukis and help in restoring peace in the state.
He further informed that as soon as they arrived here on Wednesday, the team visited various relief camps, met with the volunteers guarding the villages in the foothill areas and extended financial assistance.
The members of UMS Hojai also visited RIMS on Thursday and donated blood for people who suffered injuries in fighting for Manipur, he said calling for developing a memorial site for those who sacrificed for the sake of Manipur and expressed confidence that Meiteis settling in outside the state would contribute in their best capacity.
During the visit to relief camps, the inmates informed that though they are receiving basic needs, the only thing which haunts them is that they have become refugees in their own land.
The inmates also said that they would sacrifice their lives but would not cede an inch of Manipur to outsiders, Gulap conveyed and added that the UMS Hojai team tried to meet the chief minister but their appointment was not granted.
As such, they visited the BJP head office and submitted a memorandum.
