Senapati, July 13 2023:
The Mao Baptist Churches Association (MBCA) in a press statement has expressed strong opposition against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) .
Joining the waves of objection expressed by other CSOs and church bodies, the MBCA justified its stance saying that the UCC infringes upon the fundamental rights concerning religion and tribal customary laws and practices.
Christianity being deeply rooted to the scripture as the base for personal law, should not be replaced by a common civil law like UCC, it said.
Stating that the tribal customary laws, practice and religion of the Mao Naga tribe are inseparable, the MBCA appealed to the Government of India to safeguard the interest of the people.
Tribal people in India particularly Mao Naga Tribe and other tribal communities should be exempted from the proposed UCC, it concluded.
