35th Manipur Drivers' Day observed

The 35th Manipur Drivers Day was observed on Sunday at Manipur Press Club in remembrance of the drivers who lost their lives while serving for the wellbeing of the people.
The function was jointly organised by Manipur Drivers' Association, Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union, Senapati District Truck Owners' Association, All Manipur Gorkha Truck Drivers and Owners' Association and Highway Truck Owners' Welfare Association.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Highway Truck Owners Welfare Association president Laishram Chan-drakumar conceded that we seldom acknowledge the services rendered ?by the drivers despite the fact that the profession involves high risk.
It is not an easy job for any driver in a hilly state like Manipur.
They are sacrificing their lives for the sake of the people in trying to bring in essential commodities of the public, he said.
The president further said that in spite of the sacrifices made by the driver community, they (drivers) are mercilessly beaten up for making the slightest mistake in addition to subjected to murder and abduction.
Such incidents should be stopped under all circumstances and instead help the drivers who are providing selfless services for the people, Chandrakumar appealed.
He also commended that despite gravity of the situation and hardships faced, drivers continue to serve the people in the form of bringing in essential commodities.
Presided over by Manipur Drivers' Association president Saikhom Babudhon Meitei, the function was also attended by All Manipur Gorkha Truck Drivers and Owners' Association president Anil Khawas, MDA advisor Samom Ganga Meitei, Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union president Bosy and Senapati District Truck Owners' Association advisor Pichu Mao as guests of honour.
A magazine entitled "Lamjelloi" was also released on the occasion.
