At the observance, AMRTD&MWU general secretary M Anil said that the driver community in Manipur has been observing January 14 as Drivers' Day every year since 1991 to commemorate the day when thousands of drivers staged a protest at Koirengei old airfield in Imphal for 15 days to highlighting their grievances in 1990 .
Of the 306 drivers who had expired, 70 per cent of them were murdered after holding them captive for ransom, he said.
Stating that the contribution of the drivers to the society is immense, Anil continued that the driver community has been transporting essentials along the two National Highways amid the violent conflicts by risking their lives.
He appealed to all to show compassion to the drivers and refrain from harassing or holding them captive for ransom.
Saying that the violence in Manipur has taken a heavy toll on Meitei drivers, Anil appealed to the Government to provide some sort of assistance to the Meitei drivers and alleviate their suffering.
Meanwhile at Manipur Press Club, HTOWO president L Chandrakumar highlighted the inconvenience being faced by the drivers in transporting goods and the financial burden they face while urging the Government to address their problems.
The drivers have been bringing in goods and essentials to the State despite the prevailing situation in Manipur by putting their lives at stake, he added.
Unfortunately, drivers are frequently harassed, assaulted and even murdered in Manipur and the same is not a new thing, Chandrakumar rued and maintained that drivers are given the respect they deserve in Meghalaya but the same is not seen in other North East States.
