JNIMS conducts second knee transplant on cancer patient

For the first time in the state, JNIMS hospital successfully conducted the second knee transplant on a bone cancer patient under the CMHT scheme.
Speaking to newspersons at the counselling hall of JNIMS administrative block on Friday, the patient, Waikhom Ningthemiao (64) of Kodompokpi, informed that he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2009 at Tata Cancer Hospital, Mumbai and had knee transplant using stainless steel custom-made implant mega prosthesis.
In 2017, he developed problems with the transplant and could not continue further treatment due to financial issues as well as Covid-19 pandemic.
About five months ago, he injured his knee and could not afford treatment for the same.
A few months ago, he consulted Dr Angamba Heisnam of JNIMS Orthopaedics department , who examined is knee and assured that he could transplant his knee.
Consequently, he got admitted in the hospital earlier this month for the second transplant conducted on December 23.Now he is feeling better.
Joining the media briefing, Dr Angamba said that the transplant was conducted under CMHT scheme using a Titanium custom-made implant mega prosthesis, which cost around Rs 2.5 lakh.
JNIMS director professor L Deben, who was also present at the news conference, said that JNIMS has conducted over 200 knee transplants but it is the first time for a patient to undergo second transplant on the same knee.
He also said that a 40-year-old woman suffering from bone cancer would also undergo knee transplant soon.
