MTU's innovative 'hydraulic pump' promises to revolutionise rural water supply

In a remarkable feat of innovation and problem-solving, Team Reverate from Manipur Technical University has emerged as a joint winner in the Smart India Hackathon 2023 .
The Nationwide competition, organized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Ministry of Education, aimed at addressing critical challenges faced in "our daily lives" .
The challenge presented to Team Reverate focused on finding cost-effective ways to make water sources for piped drinking water supply sustainable in rural areas, said Manipur Technical University in a statement.
The problem statement, sponsored by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, identified the need for innovative solutions to enhance water accessibility in remote regions.

Team Reverate, under the mentorship of Nongmaithem Anand, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, presented a ground-breaking solution.
"Their invention is a hydraulic pump that operates without electricity or fuel, relying solely on hydraulic pressure.
This ingenious approach aligns with the competition's theme of Renewable/Sustainable Energy," said the University.
Members of Team Reverate include Nongmaithem Anand, Asst Professor, Dept of Civil Engineering as mentor; Wahengbam Manimatum Meitei (3rd Year) Dept of Civil Engineering as the team leader and Korounganba Laishram, Longjam Venus Singh, Moirangthem Nepalion, Kharibam Manithoi Devi, Thotdharin Jajo, all 3rd Year students as members.
Out of 44,642 registered teams, Team Reverate was among 1,282 teams that made it to the grand finale held at the Nodal Centre, Lovely Professional University, Punjab.
The competition, categorized under the Senior Category, showcased the prowess of young minds in addressing complex real-world problems.
The Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide initiative that provides a platform for students to tackle pressing challenges and foster a culture of product innovation and problem-solving.
The event encourages participants to think critically, collaborate across disciplines, and develop solutions that can positively impact society.
