Imphal, July 05 2024:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should understand that the people of Manipur are not satisfied with the statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with regard to the violence in the state during the ongoing Parliament session, said former minister and former Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president N Loken.
In a press meet held at his Sangaiprou residence on Friday, Loken said that MP Dr Akoijam Bimol's 8-minute speech in the Lok Sabha resonated with the people of Manipur, leaving them satisfied and lauding the MP for the same.
However, instead of reacting to Bimol's speech, BJP should have reacted to the PM's speech.
The ruling party should understand that the people of Manipur are unsatisfied with the PM's statements, he remarked, while questioning why the Rajya Sabha MP has not spoken about the grievances of the people of Manipur in the House.
The former minister continued that BJP's reaction to MP Bimol's speech is ill-timed and embarrassing for the party itself.
The present situation in Manipur does not warrant political mudslinging but the BJP-government is all about reacting to the opposition whether good or bad.
BJP's claim of the Congress MP not mentioning the core issues is highly unreasonable, to say the least, he remarked.
Loken then said that the BJP government has failed in allaspects.
If it continues any longer, Manipur will regress by 40 years and never be able to get move forward.
The PM's first few statements should have focussed on Manipur, the schemes undertaken and also the conflict raging in the state.
However, the PM, instead of assuring to restore peace in Manipur, spoke in a whole different direction.
Furthermore, even when the world lauded MP Bimol s speech, BJP's reaction was to "charge" at the MP to save itself from embarrassment.
Urging for collective discussion and efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the state, Loken said that he had seen sit-in protests organised on issues plaguing the state in his political career.
However, it is the first time to witness a sit-in protest organised against extortion demand to localities.
Thus, he called upon the government to put an end to the conflict, while cautioning that the continued inaction could force the people to never forgive and forget.
