Transporters appeal for waiving loans

Imphal, July 31 2024:
Highlighting inconveniences being faced by transporters owing to the nearly 15-month Jong conflict in the state, Moreh to Imphal Transport Association has urged authorities concerned to waive vehicle loans.
Speaking to media persons at Thangjing Hall of Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, Association's president Jango Khundongbam informed that they had been operating public service along the Imphal-Moreh road to sustain livelihood.
However, after ceasing operation for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the service resumed only to be halted again after the ethnic clash broke out on May 3 last year.
As vehicles plying on the said route were bought with loaned amount, banks are exerting pressure to repay the same which they managed when regular service was passible, he explained, while informing that with service put on hold they are facing serious challenges as there are no means to support their families even, not to speaking of repaying the loan.
As such, the president urged the Manipur chief minister to intervene in waiving off their vehicle loans for those who were doing passenger service from Moreh to Imphal, or provide an alternative source of livelihood.
