Imphal, September 21 2024:
Manipur, as we know it today, was saved by Lamyanba Hijam Irawat, when he stood up against the formation of North Eastern Frontier Province, Irawat Celebration Committee, Manipur president Dr Moirangthem Nara has stated.
He made the statement during the observance of Pungdongbam Incident and the 76th Manipur Kanba Numit, organised by Irawat Celebration Committee, Manipur in collaboration with CPI Lamlai Local Council, at Irawat Memorial Hall in Chalou, Lamlai on Saturday.
Nara recalled that following the tragic Pungdongbam incident on September 21, 1948, Irawat was declared a fugitive, to be caught either dead or alive by the then government.
Despite the price he paid to prevent the formation of North Eastern Frontier Province, Irawat can be credited to have save Manipur as we know it today.
As part of the observance, floral tributes were offered to the portraits of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur.
The observance was also attended by CPI Manipur State Council secretary L Thoiren Singh, assistant secretary N Singhajit Singh; CPI Lamlai Local Council veteran member Pheiroijam Gokulchand Singh, ICC Manipur secretary M Joykumar and renowned author Chana Lukhoi.
On the other hand, Loyalam Apunba Loumi Lup (LALLUP) observed the day at Loushangkhong Mayai Leikai Community Hall in Imphal East district on Saturday.
In a press release, LALLUP stated that Manipur is experiencing sufferings increasingly on daily basis, in addition to becoming heavily dependent on mainland India for its survival.
The present leaders have failed to lead the people of Manipur onto the right path.
As such, it is with the feeling that the time is ripe for analysing and understanding a great leader like Irawat with good moral, discipline, integrity, ethics and patriotism that the observance has been organised.
LALLUP continued that the present leaders are not only incompetent but have forced the people to become divided.
As per UNO, if a community or group maintains its Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is 2.1, the population will neither decrease nor increase.
However, the TFR in Manipur is 1.7, which is worrisome for the Meitei/Meetei community, it stressed.
