Humanitarian aid extended to flood victims

IMPHAL, Jun 7: In response to the rain-battered situation in Manipur, individuals and organisations are stepping up to assist relief efforts for the people affected by the devastating flood.
In coordination with Brigadier L Ibotombi Singh (retired), a team of civic action personnel including three medical teams from 33 Assam Rifles Battalion under the aegis of 9 Sector Assam Rifles has extended humanitarian assistance to the flood victims of Porompat Ayangpalli, Imphal East.
The Assam Rifles personnel distributed drinking bottle waters and dry rations including, hard variety of vegetables, to about 160 families, besides treatment of patients and distribution of essential medicines to about 200 persons.
The medical team also visited bed ridden patients in their homes and gave them timely medical treatment.
Another team comprising of three sub-teams carried out fogging in these areas on Friday night.
Under the directions of Brigadier Ananyan Boral, Commander 9 Sector, the Civic Action team distributed 9000 liters of potable water to 60 families at Ayangpalli Mutum Leikai and another 10000 liters of potable water to 70 households at Meri Leirak, Soibam Leikai.
Similarly, to help the people affected by the devastating floods, Khurai Local Council, Communist Party of India organised a rice distribution programme at Khurai Thongam Leikai on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, RK Amusana, state executive member of CPI Manipur State Council said that the devastating floods have added to the burden of the people who are already suffering due to the conflict which has been going on for more than two years.
He mentioned that due to breaching and overflow of rivers at different points, there was extensive flooding in Imphal East district.
"Many residential areas within Khurai AC including Saoibam Leikai, Thongam Leikai, Chaithabi Leirak and Konsam Leikai have been indundated", he added.
RK Amusana also appealed to the Government to take immediate action to help flood victims, including providing relief supplies, safe shelter, and addressing the long-term needs of affected communities.
L Sotinkumar, former state secretary; M Sakhi Devi, state control commission member; Th Suresh, state executive members and other party members were also present at the event.
Meanwhile, in continuation of their flood relief effort, the joint rescue team of All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) distributed essential medicines to the flood affected people of Wangkhei Ayangpalli and nearby regions.
The team also visited the Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi Relief Camp, which is currently accommodating about 70 people.
Fresh supplies of essential medicines were handed over there through members of Naharol Sintha Kanglup (NSK).
The aid initiative was carried out with the help of All Manipur Chemist and Drug Association.
The team led by AMUCO vice president Dr Norendro Thokchom, general secretary Pratap Leishangthem and secretary publicity Heishnam Phoren carried out the distribution of essential medicines to the victims of flood.
AMUCO and MSF have extended gratitude to the volunteers of Wangkhei Ayangpalli Diamond Club, Wangkhei Ayangpalli Leima Keithel Apunba Lup and Naharol Sintha Kanglup for their help.
