Imphal, January 07 2025:
A woman overseeing ground levelling work for construction of her house at Konsakhul K Lungwiram village in Kangpokpi district was allegedly thrashed by some miscreants on Tuesday.
As per sources, the woman belonging to Zeliangrong Naga community was levelling the ground with use of excavator when Kuki miscreants numbering around 20 came stopped the construction process.
The miscreants thrashed the woman, smashed her mobile phone and even warned of torching the excavator if ground work continues, the source said adding the miscreants also used expletives against the woman and Konsakhul villagers.
In a video circulated on social media after the incident, the victim woman said that some 20 Kuki youths showed up at the spot where she was preparing to construct her own house and told her to stop the construction process immediately.
She said the Kuki youths pinned her to the ground after thrashing and smashing her mobile phone.
She also drew immediate attention of Naga civil organisations, Konsakhul villagers and authority to look into the matter and deliver justice.
Notably, Liangmai Naga people settling in Leimakhong area face threats and assaults by Kuki people including KRA cadres in the last few months.
A house belonging to Liangmai Naga at Leimakhong was torched by Kukis in June, 2023 while another Naga village was beaten up badly.
Meanwhile, Foothill Naga Joint Committee strongly condemned the incident, stating that the calculated attack and molestation on the Naga woman was not merely an attack on the individual but a direct challenge to the identity and dignity of Naga people as a whole.
According to a statement of the committee, the woman was levelling her plot of land in the middle of the village but brutally assaulted and her modesty outraged in broad daylight by a gang of Kukis.
Such abominable crime and unforgivable act committed by the community, which sought refuge on Naga soil reflects total disregard to the age-old principle of peaceful co-existence that the Nagas upheld with honour.
It is painful to declare that Kukis have crossed all limits, the committee said and urged authority concerned to apprehend and hold the perpetrators accountable.
The committee also served a 48-hour ultimatum to leadership of the perpetrating community to issue a formal and sincere apology in writing to both the victim and the Naga people.
