Education Dept urged to address woes of Naga students

Imphal, August 05 2023: Naga Students' Union Chandel (NSUC) has urged Directorate of Education (S) to address issues relating to admission and transfer of Naga students belonging to Chandel and Tengnoupal districts who have been affected by the unrest situation in the state.

In a letter to education (S) director, NSUC president SK Joseph Lamkang appealed to the directorate to look into the non-issuance of transfer certificate/ NOC by schools based in valley, Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM) /Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM); exemption of transfer fees at schools and COHSEM & BOSEM; delimiting change of sub jects due to non-availability in Chandel & Tengnoupal district; non-availability of desired subjects of the displaced students from valley in Chandel Tengnoupal; and provisions to engage guest lecturers & teachers wherever subject teachers are not available.

The constant violence in different parts of the state has created an ambiance of panic and insecurity, making it complicated for parents to ensure their children's access to quality education.

Due to this many Naga students from Chandel and Tengnoupal districts studying are forced to return home from the valley districts, it added.

NSUC mentioned that despite the order issued on June 12 by the Directorate of Education (S) to facilitate admission process multiple obstacles are hindering effective implementation of the same.

The Union also claimed that Naga students from Chandel and Tengnoupal districts are being told to return to their previous/respective schools when approached for issuing requisite documents.

Stating that despite the order issued, some institutions are charging certain amount for change of subjects, etc., NSUC emphasised that the affected students should be allowed to change their subjects without hassle and payment of additional fees.

The inconveniences and disturbances faced by the citizens of Chandel and Tengnoupal districts especially the Nagas to in the valley districts, especially the capital city of Imphal area, is further exacerbating the challenges in obtaining school related documents, thereby forcing many students to remain idle home, it said.

The Union further observed that students are still traumatised from the violence and sudden evacuation from the valley districts that they are not in mental state to return to their respective schools.

Many affected students are reported to have developed academic related depression due to these critical situations of vulnerability and confusion, it stressed.

NSUC also urged the authorities concerned to take immediate and proactive measures to address the difficulties in obtaining school admission and associated issues, while requesting the directorate to enforce the order issued on June 12 and take in special admission drives to accommodate students affected directly or indirectly by the violence.
