Imphal, January 24 2025:
Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, MAHUD minister Yumnam Khemchand led a cleanliness drive from Khoyathong to Nagamapal road in Imphal city on Friday, cleansing both flanks of the road.
Regarding the cleanliness drive, Khemchand told media persons that Imphal city would never be clean or free from wastes till the citizens take self-responsibility on cleanliness.
"I have seen people coming in cars and throwing household wastes on the roadside, particularly after dusk," the minister said, while conceding that efforts made to keep Imphal city clean would remain futile if the masses do not embrace cleanliness and act responsibly.
While stating that he had seen videos uploaded on social media platforms recently regarding huge wastes piled up at different locations in Imphal city, minister Khemchand thanked those who posted the videos for awakening him and the department.
He then appealed to Imphal residents to support NGOs collecting household wastes from door-steps and expressed hope that wastes piled up on roads could be reduced significantly with such initiative.
According to Y Khemchand, a meeting of commissioner and directors of the department held on Thursday decided to start collection of wastes from door-steps in Thangal bazar after a similar drive in Paona bazar yielded positive outcome.
Meanwhile, MAHUD director Ng Bhogen, who also joined the cleanliness drive, informed media persons that the department has identified 13 locations in Imphal city where huge wastes are piled up.
Informing that drive to remove the wastes will be taken up very soon, he sought help from the public, while maintaining the department alone cannot keep Imphal city neat and clean all the time.
MAHUD commissioner M Joy and corporators of Imphal Municipal Corporation also took part in the cleanliness drive.
