Imphal, July 05 2024:
Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has categorically asserted that it would oppose implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in areas falling under the jurisdiction Kuki-Zo community.
Amid the growing pitch for updating the NRC in the state, a statement issued by KIM opined that the state government may implement NRC at their convenience and within their own territorial bounds, clearly marked by buffer zones.
However, the Manipur state issue does not concern directly with the Kuki-Zo people, who have been forced out of the valley and have petitioned the government of India for constitutional protection through the creation of a Union Territory with a legislature, it said.
The statement maintained that if the central government deems it necessary to implement the NRC in Kuki-Zo inhabited regions, they will not oppose genuine efforts for identification and necessary actions, provided that such measures are conducted under the strict supervision of the Supreme Court and in consultation with Kuki Inpi Manipur.
Stating that any illegal immigrant found, regardless of being Kuki, Naga, or Meetei, should be dealt with according to the established laws of the country, Kuki Inpi also emphasised the urgent need for a political settlement to bring lasting solution and called for ending hostilities.
The statement accused the Meetei leadership of oppression and persecution, citing loss of over 100 lives, destruction of more than thousands of houses, and over tens of thousands of Kuki-Zo people rendered homeless.
Kuki Inpi declared that the Meetei leadership, particularly under N Biren, has no legitimate authority over the future of the Kuki-Zo people due to their "oppressive actions" and asserted creation of a Union Territory with a legislature would be the only viable solution to safeguard the Kuki-Zo people.
