LHTC condemns oil leakage, seeks fair probe

Leimakhong Hill Town Committee (LHTC) has vehemently condemned the leakage of oil, reportedly from the Leimakhong Heavy Fuel Power Station, and demanded a fair investigation and action against those responsible for endangering the environment and the Kuki-Zo community.
According to a statement, LHTC came to know about the leakage of oil through social media platforms on January 10 evening.
It said that the spill over of oil from the Leimakhong Heavy Fuel Power Station has already affected more than 14 Kuki-Zo houses in the surrounding area while contaminating the nearby streams, affecting the environment and causing health hazards to both animals and human beings.
The statement also mentioned that the foul smell of the oil is unbearable for human beings further threatening outbreak of serious health issues.
While strongly condemn ing the incident, LHTC also slammed the failure of the department concerned to take enough precautions to safeguard the station and prevent such an incident.
The Committee urged the department concerned and the district administration as well as the district SP to hold accountable those responsible for endangering the environment and the Kuki-Zo communities by means of fair and transparent investigation and take immediate action to avoid further damage from the heavy fuel leakage.
