Imphal, August 01 2024:
A team of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) accompanied by staff of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) Imphal East visited Akampat to take stock of the situation where school children were affected by tear gas shells fired by the police.
At Eastern Ideal High School, Akampat, the team discovered that around 140 students were present at school today.
Although the total enrollment figure of the school stands at 800, a majority of them were fortunately at home for summer vacation.
Panic stricken by the sounds and smell of the tear gas shells, many students fainted and teachers rushed to provide them with first aid.
Among them, Y Sanjana, a Class V student from Okram Chuthek, was taken to Little Clinic Hospital for treatment.
She was discharged and sent home after recovery.
Some students of S Chaoba Memorial School also fainted due to fear and anxiety induced by the firing of tear gas shells, mock bombs etc.
Two Class VI students, Heisnam Simran, an IDP from Churachandpur currently staying at a relief camp along with Linthoingambi from Singjamei Kshetri Leikai were among those hospitalized.
Some students were also reportedly treated at home.
In consideration of today's events, MCPCR said that it has found indications that police personnel flouted rules to employ restraint and precautions while engaging in crowd control measures close to school premises.
MCPCR asserted that this could set a terrifying precedent.
Expressing concern for the well-being of school students, MCPCR has urged the authority concerned to take up tangible steps to prevent such incidents from happening again.
