Survey for Moirang-Thanga road, Loktak Lake bridge begins

Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman M Asnikumar spearheaded a field survey in Thanga on Saturday, marking the preliminary steps towards expansion and upgradation of the Moirang-Thanga road and the Loktak Lake bridge.
Accompanied by officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and consultants, Asnikumar reviewed plans for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) during the visit.
The ambitious project is set to establish direct connectivity between Bishnupur, Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts while integrating Thanga with key national highways, including Tiddim Road (NH 02), Mayai Lambi (NH 137/A), and the Indo-Myanmar National Highway (NH 102/Asian Highway) .

Regarding the initiative, Asni-kumar exuded that the project has immense transformative potential for Thanga constituency in Bishnupur district.
He informed that the infrastructure upgrade would act as a catalyst for regional integration, economic growth, and sustainable development.
The plan includes critical upgrades to approach roads linking Moirang and Keibul Lamjao to Thanga, improvements along the Moirang Khunnou-Keibul Lamjao stretch, and the development of infrastructure around Thanga Hillock, Complete with retaining walls, drainage systems, culverts, and safety barriers.
Additionally, the project envisions constructing new roads from Thanga Salam Mandha (Pukhrambam Ching) to Chingthi, along with bridges over Loktak Lake to connect Mandha with Mukap and Chingthi.
This network will extend till Sekmaijin in Imphal West, providing enhanced connectivity across the region.
Asnikumar also highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the proposed Thanga Salam Mandha-Chingthi route, which once served as a key trade and cultural link connecting Thanga to Kakching, Wabagai, Sekmaijin, Mayang Imphal, and beyond.
The restoration of this route is expected to rekindle historical ties, strengthen cultural heritage, and stimulate regional economic activities.
He further disclosed that the enhanced connectivity will facilitate planned tourism projects, including initiatives for Thanga Hillocks, heritage sites, and the upgradation of the Regional Water Sports Complex at Takmu.
"These efforts aim to draw tourists and researchers to the region, creating economic opportunities for local communities," Asnikumar remarked, adding that the project aligns with India's Act East Policy by fostering regional and international integration.
He acknowledged the steadfast support and guidance of chief minister N Biren and the proactive efforts of works minister Govindas Konthoujam, while commending their roles in advancing the project's survey and expediting the DPR preparation.
Asnikumar also appealed to the people of Thanga for their support and cooperation for the success of this transformative project and expressed optimism that the initiative would bring lasting development, prosperity, and welfare to the region.
