Thoubal, June 07 2025:
Tekcham United Clubs Organisation (TUCO) has appealed to private citizens or CSOs to refrain from interfering in the ongoing desilting and unclogging of Chingdoubi River carried out by TUCO for personal gains.
A press release issued by Meihoubam Bisworjit, general secretary, TUCO said that the Chingdoubi River was "dug by our forefathers years ago in the past by carving out the Tekcham Ching which lies between Thoubal and Kakching district".
The paddy fields and fish farms in Tekcham, Lousipat and surrounding regions are able to thrive because of the Chingdoubi River, said TUCO.
However, heavy rains in May and June of last year (2024) caused a landslide and clogged the Chingdoubi River.
This caused flooding in Tekcham and Lousipat destroying many fish farms and early crops.
In view of the people's plight, Tekcham United Clubs Organisation in association with Kakching and Thoubal officials as well as Tekcham public initiated restoration work in an attempt to clear the debris and declog the Chingdoubi River.
This year in a 16-day effort starting from May 12, Tekcham United Clubs Organisation has initiated desilting of the Chingdoubi riverbed from May 12 to remove the leftover debris from last year, said the press release.
As this effort will require a large sum of money, TUCO informed that it has sought the assistance of the relevant authorities.
TUCO has urged private individuals or civil society organisations to refrain from interfering in the riverbed cleaning work of the Chingdoubi River.
