Governor, CM greet on Gandhi Jayanti

Imphal, October 01 2023: Governor Anusuiya Uikey and chief minister N Biren Singh have extended warm greeting to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, which falls on October 2 .

In her message, the Governor stated that Mahatma Gandhi's message for peaceful co-existence has become increasingly relevant in the present situation of Manipur.

Mahatma Gandhi led the nation in its struggle for freedom from the British colonial rule by using non-violence (Ahimsa) as his most powerful weapon, she conveyed.

Mahatma Gandhi was a real "Karmayogi", an apostle of truth and nonviolence, a symbol of indomitable power of the soul that stood for the cause of the down-trodden and oppressed not only inIndia but also in other parts of the world, she stated, adding that, Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest theorist and practitioner of truth, non-violence and tolerance.

The Governor also appealed to the present generation to imbibe the virtue of non-violence, tolerance and humanism from the life of Mahatma Gandhi so that it will usher in a new era of hope and prosperity.

While observing the day by cleaning our surroundings, we should resolve to maintain the state of cleanliness as a regular feature to make the National Cleanliness Day meaningful, she added.

Sharing his view, chief minister N Biren said that Mahatma Gandhi's ideals have eternal value and his philosophy of 'Ahimsa' is more relevant in today's world.

"Gandhi is remembered most for his non-violent means of working for social justice, his acceptance of all faiths, and his ability to bring conflicting groups together.

"Today, we are witnessing a disturbing phase in our state's history.

Disruptive forces both from within and from outside, are resorting to the most heinous of violent acts with the intent of disrupting the state s fabric of peace and harmony, unity and diversity.

Tribes and communities have been pitted against each other by making use of deceit and dishonest narratives of history and events.

These are in completecontrast to the teaching of the Mahatma: Truth and Non-violence," the chief minister cautioned.

The events of past many months are an awakening for all of us who believe in peace and harmony, he remarked, while adding that, the intent and acts of divisive forces must make each of us realise the need for trust and oneness in defeating these forces through dialogue and non-violent means.

"On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, let us not forget Gandhiji's thoughts and actions in facing and addressing the challenges that confront us.

Let us refrain from all forms of violence while facing the challenges before us and also ensure that Gandhiji's teachings and philosophy remain integral to our consciousness.

Let us pay tribute to our beloved Father of the Nation by following his principles," the chief minister stated.
