MHRC team visits relief camps

Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Justice UB Saha visited the relief camps set up in Kakching and Thoubal districts to get first hand information about the facilities being provided to the displaced persons who fled their homes following the widespread violence which erupted on May 3.Justice UB Saha was accompanied by MHRC member KK Singh, a Law Officer, Kakching Deputy Commissioner Somorjit Salam and Additional SP (Ops) Binoy.
During the interaction, the Additional SP (Ops) conveyed that 204 guns were looted from some police stations in Kakching of which 164 guns have been recovered.
The MHRC team accompanied by the DC Kakching and the ASP (Ops) Binoy also visited Serou and found 850 houses burnt down, of which 450 belonged to Meiteis and 400 to Kukis.
Justice UB Saha also interacted with some residents of Serou who are at present taking refuge at the residence of local MLA Ranjit.
The residents informed that they have been taking refuge after their houses were attacked and looted by Kuki miscreants.
Rajeev, a BSF Commandant of MNC 4 & I briefed the MHRC team about various security measures taken up in and around Serou and Sugnu.
On the way back, the MHRC Chairperson visited a relief camp at Sugnu Municipal building where more than 100 displaced persons from Serou and Napat village are staying.
Anuradha Malik, a Bengali woman from Serou who also lost a house, shared her story with the MHRC Chairperson.
She said that she is ready to return to her place any time if the State Government provides her a house and security.
Some inmates complained about lack of medical facilities and about doctors only visiting once in a while in the camp, following which Justice UB Saha advised the DC to make sure the doctors visit the relief camp at least once a week.
The team also interacted with the displaced persons mostly from Serou and Napat village staying at Khomdonbi Memorial School, Kakching Khunou and Langmeidong Higher Secondary School.
The MHRC Chairperson advised the DC to provide job cards to the displaced persons so that they could earn some money.
Back to Thoubal, the MHRC team visited the relief camp at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sport Complex where 722 displaced persons from Moreh are taking refuge.
There, Thoubal DC A Subhash Singh informed that the district administration has been providing 10 days work under MGNREGA to the displaced folks while some inmates make candles to support their livelihood.
