Gender discrimination, violence dissected

A day-long awareness programme on the topic
"Gender Discrimination and
Gender- Based Violence" was
organised jointly by Family
Welfare Department, and
Department of Sociology, DM
College of Arts at the latter's
multipurpose hall, here, on
Tuesday.
Speaking as a resource
person on the topic "Role
of Health Professionals in
the Management of Gender-Based Violence", PC-PNDT state nodal officer
(SNO) Dr Sujata Huidrom informed that as gender-based
violence is mainly caused.
due to gender imbalance, the
same has been incorporated
in the PC-PNDT framework.
Stating that the awareness
programme is part of the initiative to prevent violence
against women and children,
she pointed out that globally,
one in every three women
faces gender-based violence,
which is not only a case of
human rights violation but also a public health issue.
Further stating that all
types of physical, verbal,
sexual, and psychological violence fall under the purview
of gender-based violence,
the nodal officer also elaborated that the other causes
of gender-based violence
include socio-cultural, economic and political factors,
as well as drug and alcohol
abuse, and mental illnesses.
Dr Sujata stressed the
need to provide medical and
psychological assistance and
medico legal examination to
victims of sexual violence
along with taking up legal
actions against the culprits.
While also stressing on the
importance of comprehend-
ing the underlying causes of
gender-based violence and
calling for collective efforts
to prevent it, she emphasised the necessity of honouring
women, empowering them
to recognise their capabilities
in advocating for their rights
and equal opportunities, thus
supporting victims and preventing future violence.
Sujata also advocated women's
inclusion in leadership- level
decision-making processes.

administrator Ravi Sharma,
who was also present as resource person, spoke on
the topic "Role of Women's
Helpline in the Management
of GBV" .
Presided over by DM College of Arts Sociology Department head RK Tombisana, the event was attended by College principal T Ranjit as chief guest.
