Imphal, April 18 2025:
A recreation point for senior citizens was inaugurated on Friday opposite Nagamapal Lai Ishing Chaiba under the theme "My City, My Responsibility", alongside the launch of a new waste management system aimed at promoting cleanliness among women vendors.
The facility, consisting of a small shed, open space with sitting arrangements, and flower pots for decoration, offering a dedicated space for elderly citizens to relax and socialise, was developed jointly by MAHUD Department and Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).
IMC mayor L Lokeshwar, who attended the inauguration ceremony as chief guest, emphasised the importance of public participation in maintaining cleanliness in the city.
He urged the public to understand their roles and responsibilities as citizens.
While rights are safeguarded by the Constitution, one must also carry out their civic duties, the mayor opined.
Noting that some families are reluctant to pay monthly garbage collection fees, he regretted that such attitudes hinder the development of society.
MAHUD director Ng Uttam, who presided over the function, urged people to stay away from the blame culture and adopt responsible waste disposal practices.
Blaming authorities while ignoring one's own duties is uncalled for, he said and appealed to women vendors - who traditionally begin their day by praying to the Keithel Lairembi for good earnings - to refrain from practices that pollute the market area.
Towards promoting cleanliness among vendors, he announced a new waste management system.
Under the initiative, each Vendor will be provided a garbage bag for Rs 50 in the morning.
At the end of the day, if the waste-filled bag is deposited at the IMC counter, Rs 40 will be refunded.
The remaining Rs 10 will serve as a garbage disposal fee, explained the director, while seeking public cooperation in making the system a success.
IMC commissioner K Chandrakumar attended as guest of honour alongside other IMC corporators.
