The Golden Jubilee celebration of the Manipur Press Club (MPC) was held on Monday with All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Manipur Press Club Management Committee jointly commemorating the event attended by Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Thokchom Satyabrata as chief guest and AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam as president, while IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan, Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan, and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) president Khogendra Khomdram were the guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering, speaker Satyabrata noted positive developments in the club's 50-year journey, fissured his support for further development of the press club and encouraged its members to approach him freely for assistance.
He also urged the media fraternity to exercise caution while reporting and uphold journalistic ethics.
MLA Joykisan spoke about the crucial role of traditional media like print and electronic outlets in an era dominated by social media.
While acknowledging that social media often lacks authenticity and ethical oversight, he emphasised the importance of a robust screening process in traditional media to prevent societal repercussions.
He also stressed the need for peace and tranquillity to foster development in society.
AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam reflected on the club's 50-year journey, filled with both challenges and achievements.
He noted the adherence of media professionals to Press Council of India guidelines, with necessary local adjustments, while raising concerns about the confusion created by conflicting information on social media and traditional media platforms.
As part of the event, the first AMWJU Best Photo Journalist Award was presented to Sanaleibak reporter Robinson Wahengbam.
The award was donated by City Police Station OC N Gokul.
The Thangjam Dwijama-ni Memorial Best Video Journalist Award, donated by MLA Khumukcham Joykisan, was presented to The Quint video journalist Borun Thokchom.
