Imphal, March 06 2023:
Demanding resumption of the semester classes which had been halted for a long time, agitated post graduate (PG) students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) stormed the A-Block of the varsity on Monday.
As the students were thronging the A-Block, they got into a stand-off with the police personnel posted at the premises.
The police had to resort to baton-charge to control the huge crowd of students, resulting in further scuffle between the students and the police.
Later, additional police personnel arrived, took the situation under control and picked three students to meet the vice chancellor of the university.
Speaking to newspersons after meeting the VC, student Lourembam Poireiton informed that the VC has assured of resuming normal classes after the Yaoshang holidays.
He recounted that the students had previously written to the VC as well as met him (VC) multiple times on the matter.
However, the VC did not issue any notice till date, which prompted them to launch the protest on Monday.
As such, if the VC fails to translate his assurances into action, more intense agitations will be launched.
On the other hand, DM University vice chancellor Professor N Rajmuhon stated that normal classes for PG students of the university will commence after the Yaoshang holidays.
He said that teachers from 5 colleges had been teaching and taking classes for both the undergraduates and postgraduates since 2018.However, as the existing number of teachers was not enough, not to mention of the compromise in quality, the teachers had demanded for separating the faculty for undergraduates and postgraduates.
As most of the teachers wanted to teach the post-graduates, there will be shortage of teachers for the undergraduate courses.
Amidst this, as the classification process for teachers is going on, the teachers have stopped taking classes.
As this could affect the career of the students, a meeting of the Syndicate Body of DMU was convened to solve the issue as soon as possible.
Thus, a joint meeting of DM University Teachers' Association and the Syndicate Body will be held soon and the teachers instructed to resume normal classes, he conveyed.
In addition, the results of the recruitment drive for teaching and non-teaching staff of the University will be announced soon, thereby helping to alleviate the problem of shortage of teachers, Prof Rajmuhon conveyed.
