Imphal, August 01 2024:
Chief minister N Biren criticised the demands made by internally displaced persons (IDPs) to stay at the official residences of MLAs while asking the legislators and their families to relocate to relief camps.
The CM expressed his concerns in Thursday's session of the ongoing state assembly, calling the demands "unreasonable" and contending that the rally held by IDPs had political influence.
Speaking in connection with the violent crackdown on IDP protestors at Akampat on Thursday, CM Biren urged the public and political parties not to politicise the sensitive issue of displaced people.
He emphasised that the state government is actively working to resettle those affected by the crisis and urged all stakeholders to refrain from politicising the situation.
The CM reiterated that the government is focused on restoring peace and finding a resolution to the crisis, which he stated was sparked by a High Court ruling on the Scheduled Tribe (ST) demand by the Meetei community.
The court directed the government to submit a response within four weeks, a directive that has resulted in the initial violence, he recounted.
Addressing the assembly, Biren assured that the government is making every effort to bring stability to the state through peace talks.
However, he pointed out that the current situation makes it unfeasible to send the IDPs back to their homes immediately.
The CM also made an appeal to CSOs, individuals, and political parties to avoid politicising issues that are complex and cannot be resolved instantly, and instead urged for a collective effort towards peace and stability.
