AMSU pounds on shops selling commodities at higher prices

Imphal, October 03 2015 : Members of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) seized commodities which were sold higher than normal market prices at Thangal bazaar on Saturday.

To lessen burden of the untold hardships faced by common people in the state which has been experiencing a lot of bandhs and blockades, AMSU has already warned the authorities to stop selling of commodities higher than normal market prices.

During an interaction with media persons at AMSU headquarter, DM College Campus, AMSU secretary general Manjit Sarangthem said that people of Manipur faced scarcity of daily essential commodities due to recent flood, landslides, bandh and blockades along both the National Highways which are the lifelines of the state.

To lessen problem of the common people, AMSU had also warned businessmen not to raise prices of essential commodities, he said.

A team of AMSU on Saturday conducted a surprise drive at Thangal bazaar and found one non-Manipuri shop "NS Hukmichand Chandamol Baghda" selling commodities at higher prices.

The shop was selling one kg of 'zeera' at Rs 350 against the market prices of Rs 270.Apart from that, around six items of commodities were found selling by increasing the actual prices double times.

Manjit further said that common people have been facing all the problems since food safety, CAF & PD and Weight and Measure Department of Manipur Government have failed to perform their responsibilities.

Consumer Help Line of CAF & PD has never responded fairly to complaints over such related issues, Manjit claimed.

Such laxities of the authorities have encouraged the businessmen to sell essential commodities at prices fixed by them, said the AMSU secretary general while demanding that departments which are not performing their duties should be abolished.

Manjit warned to launch intensified agitations if the Government fails to look into the matter at the earliest and also to shut down all shops which are sell commodities at excessive prices.
